Letting the hand piece hang down I would start the motor.. if It did not spin smoothly or like you say it tried to unscrew the big outer nut holding it onto the dremel tool.

The flex shaft would never engage unless held a certain way. The foredom looks a lot more heavy duty and more powerfull. The down side is that the foredom doesn't have the RPM that the dremel does.
